Guelph Grad Heads Olympic Hockey Team

Cassie Campbell, a 1997 BA graduate of U of G, is leading the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team at the Torino Olympics. The team beat Italy in its first game on Feb. 11, defeated Russia Feb. 12, and is facing Sweden today.

Campbell is one of the most successful and recognizable players in women’s ice hockey history. The 32-year-old forward and Brampton native was captain when Canada captured the gold at the 2002 Salt Lake Games.

She played in her first Olympics in 1998 when women’s hockey debuted as a Winter Games event in Nagano, Japan, and her team won the silver medal. Campbell, who was first named to the national team in 1994, is also a six-time world champion.

As an undergraduate at Guelph, she was captain of the varsity women's hockey team, led Guelph to the OWIAA Championship in 1995 and was a four-time All-Star.

Campbell will be back in Guelph April 6 for the Last Lecture, where she will be the alumni speaker. The annual lecture, which will be held in War Memorial Hall, gives graduating students an opportunity to reflect on their time at Guelph and to recognize their achievements inside and outside the classroom.
