Vet Students to Give Talks on Global Experiences

University of Guelph veterinary students who participated in the Ontario Veterinary College’s Global Vets program this summer will share their experiences at public talks Sept. 26 and 28 at 7 p.m. in Room 1714 of the Lifetime Learning Centre.

Over the summer, 13 veterinary students travelled to Peru, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania through the Global Vets program to work and learn about international veterinary medicine.

Working on the large predator conservation project in Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda, stands out as a highlight for third-year OVC student Danika Neumann. “We were able to work very closely with hyenas and lions, collecting blood and saliva to check for diseases, as well as measuring the animals’ weight, teeth, paw size and nails,” she said.

The program was started at U of G in 1997 by two second-year students and is based on a program called Defi Vet-Monde at the University of Montreal’s faculty of veterinary medicine. For more information, visit the Global Vets website.
