U of G Prof takes capstone course campus wide

For the first time, a popular capstone course that helps students make the transition from school to work is being offered to all University of Guelph students.

Registration for the course, "Transition from School to Work" (ISS*4320), runs through March 25. Designed and taught by Prof. Fred Evers, Sociology and Anthropology, the course helps students learn how to use their academic accomplishments and knowledge in the workplace. Students learn about workplace skills, build resumes, and put together portfolios that identify their skills and talents. They also study leadership issues that relate to professions in their disciplines.

The class is open to students in semester seven or above and is capped at 30 people. The course includes workshops, class discussions, guest speakers and solo and team presentations. Guest speakers include career development professionals, alumni and employers.

Evers, who won a prestigious 3M Teaching Fellowship last year, has dedicated the past 25 years to making sure that his students are prepared for the transition from school to work. "As a teacher, you worry about how your students are doing in the classroom," he says. "But you also worry about what happens afterwards. I want my students to get good jobs and promotions and succeed. I have always made this a priority."

Evers joined Guelph's Department of Sociology and Anthropology in 1985. He has received three departmental awards for excellence and innovation in teaching and, in 1997, was honoured with a university-wide award as Distinguished Professor from U of G's Faculty Association.
