Workshop to address climate change, effect on agriculture
The University of Guelph is hosting a workshop Friday, March 1, that will bring together industry, researchers and government agencies to discuss "Agricultural Adaptation in a Changing Climate."
The event will run from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Cutten Club, 190 College Ave. E. The general public and media are invited to attend. The workshop will also launch the agricultural node of the Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN), which is headed by Guelph environmental sciences professor Ellen Wall and geography professor Barry Smit. The network will promote information exchange and facilitate research on climate change adaptation in Canada's agricultural sector. The federal government is investing $125,000 per year over five years for the agricultural network.
Friday's workshop will include debates and discussions on the latest research on climate change and agricultural adaptation. Participants will also identify gaps and needs in the field. The workshop begins with an overview by Wall and Smit at 8:45 a.m., followed by a panel discussion at 9:15 a.m. that includes agricultural industry leaders. A second panel discussion begins at 10:50 a.m., featuring officials from the Canadian Forest Service and agriculture ministries from various provinces. A third panel discussion will be held at 1:30 p.m., featuring researchers from private and public agencies, followed by a workshop summary and discussion at 2:15 p.m.
