Campus community celebrates beloved chancellor's birthday
Music, banners, hundreds of balloons and cake for more than 4,000 students, faculty, staff and alumni were all part of the University of Guelph's celebration today in honour of Chancellor Lincoln Alexander's 80th birthday.
The event, held in the University Centre Courtyard, also marked the start of the University's campus community campaign.
The birthday festivities began at noon and featured a Scottish pipe procession, a choir who sang a special song for Alexander, and brief remarks from President Mordechai Rozanski. Also on hand for the celebration were the four U of G members heading the campus community campaign -- Kenda Semple, representing staff; Prof. Thom Herrmann, faculty; Todd Schenk, students; and Mary Beverley-Burton, retirees.
"We have been extraordinarily blessed to have Lincoln as our Chancellor for more than a decade," Rozanski said. "He truly embodies the values and ideals of this University at its best."
Rozanski presented Alexander with a U of G leather jacket before the community sang Happy Birthday and Alexander blew out a single candle on a huge birthday cake.
"Thank you very much for the birthday wishes," Alexander said. "I am very proud to be a member of the University of Guelph community."
