'Living with E. Coli' topic of Schofield memorial service
One of Canada’s leading experts on E. coli infection will give the 2001 Schofield Memorial Lecture Thursday, Oct. 18, at the University of Guelph.
Carlton Gyles, a professor of bacteriology in the Department of Pathobiology at the Ontario Veterinary College, will speak on “Living With E. coli” at 2:30 p.m. in Room 1714 of the OVC Lifetime Learning Centre. The lecture is free and open to the public and media.
Gyles has been studying E. coli for more than two decades. He was frequently consulted by the media during the Walkerton outbreak and is active in the pathogenesis of E. coli infections and in the investigation of the animal reservoir of bacterial food-borne pathogens.
A graduate of OVC, Gyles received his DVM in 1964 and his PhD in 1968. He is a founding member of the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety and a frequent speaker on microbial food safety. He is also the associate director of the Canadian Research Network on Bacterial Pathogens of Swine.
The Schofield Memorial Lecture Series was established in 1970 by OVC to honour Frank Schofield, one of the college’s most distinguished teachers and researchers. He taught at OVC from 1921 to 1955.
