Published by Communications and Public Affairs (519) 824-4120, Ext. 56982 or 53338 News ReleaseSeptember 27, 2001 U of G to hold forum to reflect on Sept. 11, 2001The University of Guelph is holding a campus-community academic forum tonight to reflect on the tragic events that occurred in the United States Sept. 11. This free event is open to everyone. The forum will be held in War Memorial Hall from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include an introduction by President Mordechai Rozanski. This will be followed by a panel of professors from diverse academic disciplines and fields of study exploring consequences of the events of Sept. 11, discussing the issues and offering perspectives. Panellists will also respond to questions from the audience. The panel includes economist John Benson discussing matters relating to international banking and finance; historian Richard Reid on American history; philosopher Karen Wendling on the ethical implications; environment scientist Muhammed Sadiq on community concerns; and political scientist Janine Clark on the Middle East. “Sept. 11 has changed the course of history,” said professor emeritus Henry Wiseman who will moderate the evening’s proceedings. Political scientist Maureen Mancuso, associate vice-president (academic), who helped organize the forum, added that the goal of the forum is to foster intellectual debate and reflections. “The panellists will not be presenting solutions, that is not possible as events are still evolving before our eyes,” she said. “But a university should engage people in discussions of issues as they unfold and provide a resource for the community and campus to do just that.” For media questions, contact |
