U of G celebrates homecoming this weekend
The University of Guelph’s annual Homecoming celebration will be held this weekend with the football Gryphons hosting the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday.
A precursor to the Saturday football game is the Friday-night Gryphon Club Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The man who founded the University’s Hall of Fame is one of those to be honoured. David Copp retired last year after 18 years as director of athletics. He led the project to establish the Hall of Fame as a means to honour the proud tradition of intercollegiate sport at U of G. Copp will be inducted as a builder. Athletes receiving the honour include Eric Hammond, who reached all-Canadian status while playing for the basketball Gryphons from 1988 to 1991; Villis Ozols, who played volleyball at U of G from 1980 to 1984 and was a member of both provincial and national teams; Michele Timar Jovanovich, who played soccer at Guelph from 1986 to 1990 and was an Ontario and Canadian all-star; and Mitch Mason, who competed for U of G in wrestling from 1982 to 1986 and was a two-time All-Canadian.
The 1981 Guelph wrestling team will also be recognized for their Canadian Inter-university Athletics Union championship win. In addition, the Gryphon Club Award of Merit will be given posthumously to Prof. John T. Powell, a former director of Human Kinetics at the University who was also known internationally for his contributions to the Olympics movement.
