Annual coffee break for Alzheimer's society set for Sept. 17
The University of Guelph will hold its annual Coffee Break Day to benefit the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington on Monday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The event will be held in Branion Plaza near the cannon outside the University Centre. Similar events will be held all week at more than 50 sites around Guelph, and hundreds more will be held throughout Canada to mark National Coffee Break Day. Customers will be asked to donate to the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington. Donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt.
The Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington is a local chapter of the Alzheimer Society of Canada, which provides services to those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and their families. Alzheimer’s is a degenerative brain disorder that destroys brain cells. It is not a normal part of agin and is more than memory loss or confusion. It occurs most commonly in people over 65. More than 300,000 Canadians, or 1 in 13 people over 65, are affected.
John Sleeman, honorary spokesperson for this year’s event, said: “I am delighted to be involved with Coffee Break Day at the Alzheimer Society of Guelph-Wellington. So many of us have friends or family members who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease, and this is a unique way to draw attention to the work that is being done and how much more there is to do.”
