Salary disclosure information for U of G
Sixty-eight University of Guelph employees were paid $100,000 or more in 2000, according to a list the University released today. The 68 names represent 2.6 per cent of full-time employees.
As required by the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, U of G and all other public institutions in Ontario are required to disclose the names of employees in alphabetical order, the office or position held by the employee, the amount of salary paid by the employer, and the amount of benefits reported for the employee under the Income Tax Act.
Sixty of those on the list, or 88%, are faculty and academic administrators with faculty rank: 44 are faculty, including departmental chairs, and 16 are faculty who serve as senior academic administrators. Eight, or 12 per cent of those on the list, are staff who hold senior administrative responsibilities.
The list reflects salary adjustments, regular performance reviews, and professional experience. The average age of faculty on the list is 57. Their salaries reflect the fact that they are at their peak earning power. Salary levels are competitive with those at other Ontario universities.
Thirty-one people, or 45.6% of those on the list, received salaries between $100,000 and $105,000. Forty-eight people, 70.6% of those on the list, earned between $100,000 and $110,000.
There are more than 15,000 full- and part-time students at the University of Guelph. With some 2,500 full-time faculty and staff, the University is the largest employer in Guelph and Wellington County. It is estimated that the University generates $420 million annually in local economic activity, representing approximately 15% of the local economy.
Guelph is the second-most research-intensive university in Canada, the first among non-medical schools, with total annual research funding in excess of $92.7 million in 1999-00. In addition, since 1998-99 the University of Guelph has also attracted some $97 million in funding from federal and provincial funding sources including the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund, Ontario Innovation Trust, Premier’s Research Excellence Awards and industry partners.
Guelph is the top-ranked comprehensive university in Ontario and second in Canada, according to Maclean’s Magazine (2000). Guelph ranked number one across Canada in three key indicators of student quality, including: the highest average entering grade for first-year students and the highest graduation rate.
The University of Guelph’s endowment has grown by 237 per cent since 1992 and currently exceeds $130 million. The annual budget for student scholarships and bursaries now exceeds $12.5 million a year – an increase of more than 330 per cent over the same period.
