Food Science building closed as precautionary measure
A University of Guelph employee reported receipt of a suspicious envelope to the City of Guelph police on the afternoon of Monday 15th, 2001. The City's Emergency Operations Control Group issued a City of Guelph Safety Bulletin. The contents of the envelope were sent for testing to the Ministry of Health and, as an added precaution, the University decided to close the Food Science Building, the building where the envelope was opened, pending the results of the laboratory testing. At this point, health officials are not recommending treatment of people in the building or those in direct contact with the contents of the envelope until the test results are known.
An information session will be held on Tuesday 16th, at 11:00 in the Eccles Centre (South Residence) with the University's Occupational Health Physician and a representative from the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Health Unit.
The City and the University are treating this matter seriously but most reports of suspicious envelopes and substances have not proven to be a threat to public health. Employees with concerns or questions should call Occupational Health Services (extension 2133) and students should contact Student Health Services (extension 2131).
