College Royal 2001 to be a 'Royal Affair'
The University of Guelph’s annual College Royal weekend will be held March 17 and 18 and will include demonstrations, lectures, displays, contests and performances.
The 77th annual open house weekend will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. This year's theme is “A Royal Affair,” and the open house features a new tradition of collecting non-perishable food items for local food banks. Collection bins will be set up outside the University Centre, Athletics Centre, New (Old) MacDonald’s Farm and the FACS building.
Saturday events include the popular teddy bear surgery at the Ontario Veterinary College, a pancake flip competition, body composition measurements, a physics show, synchronized swimming performances and a square dance competition. Sunday activities include the chemistry and biochemistry magic show, a plant sale, dog and cat shows, a photography contest, flower arranging displays, and the annual tug-of-war.
A lecture series will also run throughout the weekend and feature talks on research communications, ancient forests, taking greenhouse technology to space, anamorphic art and the psychology of close relationships.
A complete listing of events and activities is available on campus and at numerous locations throughout the city. College Royal is the largest student-run open house at any Canadian university. Started in 1925 as a livestock-showing competition, the event has grown to become a perennial attraction. It now includes some 3,000 volunteers and attracts more than 20,000 visitors to campus.
