Moment of Silence
The Government of Canada has declared Friday, September 14th, a day of national mourning in sympathy for the lives lost and for the bereaved families and friends of those lost in the tragic events in the United States.
At midday, in keeping with actions in capital cities across the world, Ottawa will be holding a three-minute period of silence in memory of the events. Members of the University community, including faculty teaching classes today, might care to observe a moment of silence around this time.
The University of Guelph flags will continue to remain at half-mast as a mark of respect.
I have received messages from parents of students at Guelph commending the University through its faculty, staff and student associations for the way in which we have responded as a community. Each of us will deal with this tragedy in different ways and it speaks to our sense of community and caring that we have turned to support each other.
However, as the initial shock of the news turns to grief, it is possible that members of the community will speak out on all sides of the debate. If you, as faculty members responsible for teaching classes, wish help in facilitating debate or defusing situations, please do not hesitate to contact the counselling and support services available.
