Lecture series to honour local industrialist
The first of what will become an annual lecture series honouring local industrialist Kenneth Hammond will be held at the University of Guelph Oct. 12 through Nov. 2.
The Kenneth Hammond Lectures on Environment, Energy and Resources are sponsored by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences and are intended to acknowledge Hammond's contributions over the past 40 years. A former member of the University's Board of Governors, Hammond is well-known for his work locally as a founder of Hammond Manufacturing. He is being recognized for his advocacy of environmental and resource issues and for his concern for environmental education, both within the University and the wider community, said environmental sciences Prof. Michael Moss.
Hammond was instrumental in establishing the U of G Arboretum and in the development of one of the University's pioneer distance education courses. The lectures in the "2000 Series: Malthus and the Third Millennium," will be held at 7 p.m. in War Memorial Hall. They are free and open to the public. Speakers, dates and topics are:
Oct. 12: Stephen Lewis, a former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations, "Politics, Resources and the Environment: A Witch's Brew?"
Oct. 19: William Fyfe, University of Western Ontario,"Needed New Systems for Truly Sustainable Life Support and a Positive Planetary Experience for All People."
Oct. 26: Sandra Postel, Global Water Policy Project, U.S.A., "Water, Population, and Environment: Challenges for the 21st Century."
Nov. 2, Zoology Prof. Ron Books, "Earthworms and the Formation of Environmental Ethics and other Mythologies: A Darwinian Perspective."
