U of G sends out the call to local landlords, residents

The fall may be a season away, but U of G students are already combing the classifieds and on-campus bulletin boards looking for September accommodation. This year, as in previous years, demand for desirable rooms and homes to rent is expected to be strong, so U of G administrators are making a plea to Guelph landlords and homeowners to post vacancies now.

"July is a peak month for students looking for housing for September," says Brenda Whiteside, associate vice-president (student affairs). "As part of the University's planning for the surge in demand at this time of the year and in the lead-up to September, we are asking the local community to consider renting to students this fall and listing with us now. In particular, we are looking for apartments, houses and townhouses where students can be on their own or with other students. Our experience in past years has shown us that these styles of accommodation are most preferred by students, and so we are particularly keen to attract people with self-contained units to rent."

The University's Off-Campus Housing Office maintains an extensive listing of available housing in the city. Prospective landlords interested in listing should call the office at 519-824-4120, Ext. 3357. Office staff will take the listing and can also advise on fire and building codes and other applicable regulations.

As of this spring, off-campus housing listings are also carried on a special university Web site (www.housing.uoguelph.ca/ocho) that allows students to do their housing search from wherever they are spending their summer. Each academic year, some 9,000 students live off campus, and some 4,600 are accommodated in on-campus residences and family housing sites. As part of the University's response to the demand for desirable housing, work has already begun on a new townhouse-style campus residence, due to be completed by fall 2001, which will have places for 660 students.
