U of G appoints new Provost; associate vice-president(student affairs)
Prof. Alastair Summerlee, associate vice-president (academic), has been named provost and vice-president (academic) at the University of Guelph.
Summerlee holds a B.Sc., B.V.Sc. and PhD from the University of Bristol, and joined U of G in 1988 as a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He was named associate dean of OVC in 1992, became dean of graduate studies in 1995 and served as acting associate vice-president (academic) from 1998 until he was officially appointed to the position in 1999. He has also served as chair of the Enrolment Management Committee since 1997.
"Alastair brings experience, creativity and boundless energy to this position," said President Mordechai Rozanski, "I am enthusiastic about the work we will do together in his new role. He will offer us the balance of continuity and innovation as we face the challenges of renewal and of ensuring quality and accessibility at the University of Guelph."
Summerlee was selected after an extensive search that included men and women from diverse disciplines and from institutions across Canada and abroad. The search process also included public presentations, interview sessions and a review of letters and e-mails.
He says he is "delighted" by his appointment and "excited" about the challenges that lie ahead.
The University has also named Brenda Whiteside associate vice-president (student affairs). In this role, she oversees the programs and services of the Counselling and Student Resource Centre, Student Health Services, Student Housing Services, the Office of First-Year Studies, the Child-Care and Learning Centre and the Athletics Centre.
Whiteside, who earned a BA in management economics from Guelph in 1982 and an MA in economics in 1983, was a lecturer in the Department of Economics from 1983 to 1988. She also served as secretary of the Senate and as a BA program counsellor.
In 1998, she was appointed academic assistant to the provost where she was responsible for Co-operative Education Services, U of G's semester-abroad programs and the University's articulation agreements. She also managed Guelph's review of the new secondary school curriculum.
