'Classical civilizations' coming to U of G

The 32nd annual Ontario Student Classics Conference will be held at the University of Guelph May 12 to14, featuring chariot races, discus throws, slingshot competitions and a Greek and Roman fashion show.

More than 500 high school students and teachers are expected to attend the event, which is free and open to the public. "The conference will bring together students from 23 public and independent high schools across Ontario," said co-ordinator Eugene Di Sante. "It is an athletic and academic competition to promote the study of Latin, Greek and classical civilizations in high school and beyond."

There will be 88 separate competitions during the three-day event. Highlights include:

Friday:

--8 to 11 p.m., Greek and Roman fashion show, War Memorial Hall.

Saturday:

--All day, discus throws, foot races, swimming, slingshot, tug-of-war competitions Alumni Stadium and Mitchell Athletic Centre.

--8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., archeological dig, ravine behind Lambton Hall.

--9 a.m. to 3 p.m., art displays: models, sculptures, painting, mosaics, computer art, MacKinnon Building, main floor foyer.

--10 a.m. and 1 p.m., dramatic skits, War Memorial Hall.

--4 p.m., chariot races, Alumni Stadium.

--5:15 p.m., costume parade, Johnston Green.
