College Royal 2000 promises 'Millennium Magic'

The first College Royal of the new millennium will be held March 18 and 19 at the University of Guelph, with more students participating in events than in any of the 75 previous years.

The 76th annual open house weekend will run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. This year's theme is "Millennium Magic," and attractions speak to the fundamental issues of today and tomorrow, from environmental exhibits and biotechnology discussions, to changing family life and alternative medicine displays, to avant-garde artwork.

College Royal is the largest student-run open house at any Canadian university. Begun in 1925 as a livestock-showing competition and instruction session, the event has grown to become one of the University's perennial attractions. It now includes some 3,000 volunteer organizers and attracts more than 20,000 visitors to campus.

This year's exhibits, demonstrations and learning experiences reflect the innovative and forward-looking perspective of U of G's campus community. Events range from a lecture series profiling the diverse ideas and research at the University, to a traditional livestock-showing competition, to photography contests, square dancing, magic shows, synchronized swimming performances and live animal surgery.

A complete listing of events is available online at: www.collegeroyal.uoguelph.ca. Programs will also be available at the College Royal office located on the fifth floor of the University Centre, at a special display this weekend at the Stone Road Mall near Athlete's World, and during the event.
