Final Winegard lecture speakers scheduled
The final two speakers for the University of Guelph's Winegard Visiting Professor lecture series have been scheduled for Dec. 2 and Dec. 6.
Ola Ullsten, former prime minister of Sweden and co-chair of the independent World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, will speak Thursday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. in Room 1714 of the OVC Lifetime Learning Centre. He will discuss forestry as a natural resource.
Ullsten has held diplomatic posts in Italy and Canada. He has worked for more than a decade to place the forest crisis on the public agenda, including holding meetings around the world and formulating a global strategy for sustainable use of forests.
During his visit to Guelph, Ullsten will be a guest of the College Faculty of Environmental Design and Rural Development.
On Dec. 6, Ian Warrington, CEO of the Horticulture and Food Research Institute of New Zealand, will speak at 4 p.m. in Room 104 of the Thornbrough Building. He will discuss challenges facing national research programs in plant science.
Warrington has published more than 100 scientific papers. His research career includes work on improving training and management methods for apples and kiwi fruit, and developing new cut flower crops for export.
During his visit to Guelph, Warrington will be a guest of the Department of Plant Agriculture.
The Winegard Visiting Professorship was established in 1975 to enable the University to invite distinguished professors from around the world to enhance academic programs. The professorship rotates among U of G's six colleges each year; this year it is sponsored by the Ontario Agricultural College.
