Hopper lecturer to address future of development

A Peruvian economics professor and winner of the United Nations Peace Medal will deliver the 1999 Hopper Lecture on International Development Tuesday, Oct. 26 at the University of Guelph.

Francisco Sagasti will speak on "The Future of Development Co-operation: More of the Same or Radical Break?" at 7:30 p.m. in the MacNaughton Building, room 113. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is funded by a grant from the International Development Research Centre and is co-ordinated by U of G's Centre for International Programs.

Sagasti, who was awarded the peace medal in 1980, has been an adviser in science and technology to international and Peruvian agencies, including the World Bank and International Development Research Centre. He is a professor of economics at Peru's Universidad del pacifico and the University of Pennsylvania.

Sagasti will be on campus Monday, Oct. 25 and Tuesday, Oct. 26 and will be available for media interviews. To arrange an appointment, contact Isobel Lander, Centre for International Programs, 824-4120, Ext. 6904.
