Canoe's place in Canadian life topic of lecture at U of G
James Raffan, a canoeist, outdoor enthusiast and professor, will give a free public lecture at the University of Guelph Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in War Memorial Hall.
The lecture will be an audio-visual presentation titled "Canoe Country"and will explore how canoes and canoe imagery enter the lives of Canadian in surprising ways. Raffan, professor of outdoor and experiential education at Queen's University, has explored Canada by canoe for more than 30 years.
Raffan grew up in Guelph and developed his initial interest in canoeing on the Speed River. He has headed expeditions in all parts of the country and has written numerous books, including his latest, Bark, Skin and Cedar: Exploring the Canoe in Canadian Experience.
The lecture will incorporate history and anecdote, including how people have utilized the imagery of canoes to build and promote their interests. The event is co-sponsored by U of G's geography department and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
