U of G hosts conference on New World Order

The University of Guelph's School of Languages and Literatures is hosting an interdisciplinary conference on The New World Order Friday, Sept. 24 from 3:30 to 7 p.m.

The free public conference explores important issues such as the economic and social impact of free trade and globalization and the rights of the individual.

It will be held in the Thornbrough Building, Room 100. Speakers and topics are:

-- 3:30 p.m., John McMurtry, "Globalization and the Economics of Life and Death." McMurtry teaches philosophy at U of G and recently published Unequal Freedoms: The Global Market as an Ethical System.

-- 4 p.m., David Orchard, "The Fight for Canada." Orchard is a Saskatchewan farmer, lawyer and co-founder of Citizens Concerned about Free Trade. He recently ran for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada.

-- 4:30 p.m., Keith Ellis, "Cuba's Encounter with the Changing Faces of Imperialism." Ellis teaches Latin American literature and culture at the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books on Cuban literature and society.

-- 5 p.m., Marjaleena Repo, "Furthering the Goals of the New World Order: Media and the War." Repo is a freelance writer, media critic and activist.

-- 5:30 p.m., Michael Mandel, "The Legal Institutions of the New World Order: Global Democracy or Might is Right?" Mandel is a professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and a visiting professor at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

-- 6 p.m., discussion period.
