Orchid show will have U of G blooming
Thousands of flowers will be blooming inside the University of Guelph's University Centre Sept. 25 and 26 for the Central Ontario Orchid Society's 1999 Orchid Show.
The event will be held in Peter Clark Hall, located on the lower level of the University Centre. It will run Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $5 at the door, or $4 for seniors or advance tickets. Children 12 and under are free.
"You don't have to be interested in buying orchids to enjoy an orchid show," said Kate Stuttaford, a U of G graduate student and member of the Central Ontario Orchid Society. "If you like walking around the street and admiring people's gardens, you will enjoy an orchid show."
There will be more than 20 professional and amateur exhibits from vendors across Southern Ontario. The show will include judging, educational displays, talks and demonstrations. There will also be artwork using orchids or their images, along with flower arrangements, corsages, paintings, needlework, quilts, stained glass and pottery. Vendors will sell orchids and supplies from around the world, and guided tours will be available.
This is the first time in six years the annual flower show has been held at U of G.
Orchids make up the largest family of flowering plants on Earth. There are more than 50,000 species, and orchids can grow in almost any climate. A number of orchids are native to southern Ontario, and most orchids grown in Canada are tropical plants, grown indoors.
