U of G names top scholarship winners
The University of Guelph has awarded 12 entering students its prestigious President's Scholarship. Valued at more than $20,000 over eight semesters, the scholarship recognizes academic accomplishments and contributions to school and community.
Several hundred students apply for the scholarship each year. This year's recipients are from Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec and Nova Scotia and have interests ranging from mathematics and physics to drama, poetry and veterinary medicine.
Scholarship winners were chosen for overall excellence, including academics, community involvement and endorsements from teachers, principals, coaches and others.
President Mordechai Rozanski will present the scholarships Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 11:45 a.m. in the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre. Chancellor Lincoln Alexander will also attend the ceremony. President's Scholarships have been awarded to 152 students since 1987.
This year's winners are:
Adam Algar is a graduate of Cabot Jr./Sr. High School in Dingwall, Nova Scotia, where he received the Governor-General's Medal, the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal and the Queen Elizabeth Medal and excelled in mathematics. He was an award-winning captain of high school soccer and basketball teams and a member of the Nova Scotia cross-country ski team. He enjoys poetry, plays the bagpipes and plans to become a veterinarian.
Jonathan Beer is a graduate of Centre Hastings Secondary School in Madoc, Ontario, where he excelled in mathematics and computer science. Among his recent honours are the John Kemp Memorial Award, the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board Award and a Governor-General of Canada medal. He played first trombone in his school's concert band and is a cyclist and volunteer bowling coach. He plans to become a software programmer.
Brad Clark is a graduate of Korah Collegiate and Vocational School in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, where he won numerous awards, including the Grade 12 PTA Award, the Principal's Award and the Canadian Association of Principals Student Leadership Award. He served as treasurer of his school's student council and co-director of its environmental club, and participated in drama, radio and curling. He plans to study chemistry.
Christopher Elder is from Dundee, Quebec, although he attended school in New York, where he graduated from The Salmon River Central School. He served as senior class vice-president, played in various musical ensembles and participated in track and field. His awards include the Kodak Young Leader Award, the Academic All Northern Award and the U.S. Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award. He is interested in medical research and practice.
Chris Enright of Scarborough, Ontario, graduated from Woburn Collegiate Institute where he received the Royal Canadian Legion OAC Canadian History Award and the Scarborough Association for Gifted Education Language Award. He competed regionally as a fullback in senior rugby, wrote for the school yearbook and played percussion in jazz and wind ensembles. He also worked as a Scouting leader and plans a career as a zoo veterinarian.
Kimon Issigonis is from Brandon, Manitoba, where he graduated from Vincent Massey School. He earned high standing in national physics, mathematics and engineering competitions and received a CIBC Scholar Athlete Award and a Kiwanis Academic Leadership Award. He served as student council president, performed in school drama productions and played jazz guitar and trumpet. He will study biology and pursue medicine.
Aviva Leber is a graduate of Sir Robert Borden High School in Nepean, Ontario. She was editor of her high school yearbook, president of the debating society and a tutor. She won various subject awards, ranked highly in the Fermat mathematics contest and received the Elliot Trophy, the Padgett Scholarship, and the Jewish War Veterans Scholarship. She plans to pursue interests in molecular biology and genetics and medicine.
Anila Mathai from Cambridge, Ontario, graduated from Rockway Mennonite Collegiate where she received numerous academic awards, including commendation in fine arts and high ranking in the Fermat mathematics contest. She was student council president and yearbook editor and participated in musicals and dramatic productions. She also served as a camp counsellor and a church and hospital volunteer. She plans to study biological sciences.
Sally Murdock of Waterloo, Ontario, attended Waterloo Collegiate Institute where she was co-producer of a student-run theatrical production and a member of her school's athletic directorate. An MVP award-winning athlete, she participated in high school basketball, track and field, swimming, water polo and softball. She was named to the regional volleyball all-star team and plans to study mathematics or physics.
Kelly Ogilvie of Bowmanville, Ontario, graduated from Bowmanville High School, where she won numerous subject awards and placed highly in national mathematics contests. She served in student government and as a peer helper. A former competitive swimmer, she has demonstrated leadership skills as a Guide leader and community volunteer. She enjoys canoeing, hiking and cross-country skiing and plans to study biomedical sciences.
Jacqueline Swaisland of Bradford, Ontario, attended Bradford District High School where she received numerous awards, including the OSSTF Sportsmanship Award and was involved in student council and athletics. She was a member of the drama club and school band, and played volleyball, basketball, baseball, badminton and curling. She plans to study philosophy and business.
Jill Welshman from London, Ontario, is a graduate of Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School where she was involved in basketball, volleyball and badminton. She was co-president of the school's athletic association, an all-star volleyball player and member of the championship regional volleyball team that won a gold medal in the 1996 Ontario Summer Games. The former peer tutor plans to study biological engineering.
