High school students 'connect' at U of G

Several hundred Ontario high school students are expected on campus April 30 for the first-ever "Guelph Connection" conference.

The goal is to give students who applied to the University another opportunity to visit campus before they decide where to attend school. The deadline to accept offers of admission is June 1 this year, a month earlier than in the past.

The conference will allow participants to learn more about life as a university student and experience university-style lectures, said Susan Vercruysse, assistant registrar, student recruitment. "Participants will have the opportunity to network with other students considering Guelph as their home away from home in September."

The day-long conference includes a welcome address by president Mordechai Rozanski, a presentation by the Office of First-Year Studies, campus tours and morning and afternoon sessions led by faculty and staff.

All high school students who applied for admission to the University are invited.

The wide-ranging sessions focus on research and topics of interest to students. Campus offices and programs such as Co-operative Education Services, the Human Rights Office, the Department of Athletics and the Centre for International Programs will also offer sessions.

"Many students are overwhelmed by the prospect of attending university and what the whole experience will be like. This will give them a sense of what to expect and how to deal with the transition to university," added Laura Beattie, a liaison officer for recruitment events.

An additional tour day is planned May 15 for students who can't attend the conference. Tours will leave the University Centre at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
