Sir Colin Berry to speak on pesticides in agriculture

"Pesticides in Agriculture: Questions of Risk - Worrying More about Less" is the topic of a March 5 lecture by Professor Sir Colin Berry, an internationally renowned expert on toxicology, at the University of Guelph.

The free public lecture will be held at 3:10 p.m. in Room 1714 of the Lifetime Learning Centre at the Ontario Veterinary College.

Berry is the fourth of 10 speakers in the W.C. Winegard Alumni Visiting Professorship series, being held by the Ontario Agricultural College this year as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations.

Berry will also discuss "Toxicology and Regulation - The Role of Science" at a toxicology symposium on March 6 in the Lifetime Learning Centre. Berry is chairman of the UK Advisory Committee on Pesticides, which advises the government on pesticide science. He served as Warden of the new School of St. Bartholomew's and the London Hospital Medical and Dental Colleges from 1994 to 1996, and before that, was Dean of the London Hospital Medical College. He has served on advisory committees on health and related matters, and he has published more than 200 papers on development, vascular biomechanics and toxicology. He was knighted in 1993 for services to the sciences; that same year he was also elected to the German Academy of Sciences.

Berry has been a council member, assistant registrar and treasurer of the Royal College of Pathologists, and president of the European Society of Pathology. He is a former member of the Medical Research Council of Great Britain and continues to chair its AIDS Research Co-ordinating Committee.

The W.C. Winegard Alumni Visiting Professorship was established in 1975 by the Alma Mater Fund Advisory Council to allow the University of Guelph to bring in distinguished professors from around the world to enhance academic programs. The annual program is designated to a different college each year.
