U of G responds to Canadian government's new agriculture policy
The following is a joint statement from Prof. Alan Wildeman, Vice-President (Research) and Prof. Craig Pearson, Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College.
The University of Guelph is pleased that the federal government is strengthening its commitment to the future of Canadian agriculture with new investments of more than $5 billion over the next six years.
As one of Canada's premier centres of agri-food research, Guelph welcomes this bold and visionary move, which recognizes that value is added to our rural industries and consumers through research.
Combined with support from the provinces, this vital infusion of funding will benefit farmers, consumers, rural communities, the environment and, indeed, the entire Canadian economy. It will ensure Canada's place as the world's leader in agriculture, agri-food and high-quality, safe food and make us more competitive in international markets over the long term. The Ontario Agricultural College's 2002+ strategic plan, released earlier today, is consistent with the government's new agricultural policy and will strengthen our research
for the benefit of Ontario and the country.
