Campus trees to be removed
A number of campus trees will be removed because they are either dead or pose a safety hazard. Removals will begin the week of July 22.
The trees designated for removal are located across campus and include a number of maples along Winegard Walk, pine trees behind South Residences and trees of various species near the University Centre. Some trees by parking lot 18 behind East Village residence will also be removed and trimmed to enhance safety for residence students who park there. Signs will be placed on all large and/or prominent trees before they are removed.
The trees on Winegard Walk will be replaced this summer, on the recommendation of U of G’s Landscape Advisory Committee. Although the committee had previously considered not replacing dead trees along the walk, it has reassessed this position, believing the esthetic impact and economic impact of not replacing this many trees would be too great.
The trees to be removed in other campus locations will not be replaced until U of G has developed a comprehensive tree planting plan based on the University’s newly revised campus master plan, which is expected to be approved this fall.
