U of G holds Enviro-Week

The University of Guelph is hosting Enviro-Week Oct. 7 to 11 to promote environmental awareness on campus and in the community. The workshops, seminars and events are free and open to students, faculty and the general public.

Enviro-Week is a joint initiative of the Environmental Sciences Student Executive, Guelph Students for Environmental Change, Ontario Public Interest Research Group and the university's recycling co-ordinator, Gillian Maurice. "The idea came out of a student environmental round table as a way to raise environmental awareness within the university community," said Maurice.

Some highlights of the week include:
Monday, Oct. 7

• "Ecology, Spirituality and Justice: Towards a New Eco-Activism," Jim Profit, Ecology Project of the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice, 7 p.m. OVC Lifetime Learning Centre, Room 1715.

Tuesday, Oct. 8

• "Nature Interpretation" workshop, Alan Watson, director of the Arboretum and environmental biology professor, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., MacKinnon Building, Room 305.

• "Climate Change: What's the Big Deal?" Barry Smit, University of Guelph geography professor and lead author in the United Nations assessment of climate change, 7 p.m. Lifetime Learning Centre, Room 1714.

Wednesday, Oct. 9

• "Pesticides Are Poisons!" Leslie St. Jacques, Pesticide-Free Lawn and Garden Care Project co-ordinator, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., MacKinnon Building, Room 312.

Thursday, Oct. 10
• "Building Sustainable Communities," Brenda Dolling, Whole Village Sustainable Farm Community member, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., MacKinnon Building, Room 305.

Friday, Oct. 11

• "Carbon Credits in Agriculture: Will They Save Kyoto?" Claudia Wagner-Riddle, agricultural meteorology professor, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., MacKinnon Building, Room 312.
