U of G top comprehensive research university, report says

The University of Guelph is the top comprehensive research university in Canada, according to a report by Research Infosource Inc. that was published today in a National Post supplement.

The report ranked Canada’s top 50 research universities for research intensity, sponsored research income and number of full-time faculty. Guelph was ranked first among comprehensive universities (those with a significant amount of research activity and a wide range of programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels) and 11th overall. Guelph is the only university without a medical school that reported a research budget in excess of $100 million.

“It is great to be recognized nationally for our research activity,” says Alan Wildeman, vice-president (research). “It is particularly satisfying to know that as a comprehensive university, we touch on many areas of inquiry in our research efforts.”

The report says Guelph’s research income exceeded $106 million in the 2001 fiscal year, a 10-per-cent increase from the previous year. Guelph also had a per-faculty research average of $159,400.

“The success on a per-faculty basis places Guelph sixth in the country in research intensity and the only university in the top 10 without a medical school,” Wildeman says. “This is a key indicator of the quality of work people here are doing and of the attraction of Guelph as a place to do research.”

Research Infosource Inc. is a division of The Impact Group, a consulting firm that provides information about the research activities of Canadian companies, universities and governments.

The Infosource Inc. ranking is the latest in a series of national external reports that draw attention to Guelph’s quality of teaching, research and student support. On Oct. 23, the Globe and Mail published the results of the University Report Card online survey in which students ranked Guelph the top comprehensive university in the country and fourth among all Canadian universities. In addition, the recent Canadian University Accountability Survey ranked Guelph Canada’s top comprehensive university and fourth among all institutions.
