Three writers to visit U of G
The University of Guelph's School of Literatures and Performance Studies in English, in collaboration with the Porcupine's Quill publishers, is hosting a reception and reading by three authors Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Room 441 of the University Centre. Mike Barnes, Sharon English and Jane Barker Wright will read from their new works of fiction. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
"Barnes, English and Wright all write fiction with a central theme of the family that is edgy, wry, clever and aching," said Amanda Jernigan of the Porcupine's Quill.
Barnes, an award-winning Toronto writer, will read from his novel, The Syllabus. His poetry collection, Calm Jazz Sea, was shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Award for best first book of poetry, and his story collection, Aquarium, won the Danuta Gleed Award for best first story collection.
English, a Toronto teacher and freelance editor, will read from her debut collection of stories, Uncomfortably Numb. The stories are centred around an adolescent living in a city suburb in the 1980s.
Wright, a Vancouver writer, will read from The Understanding, the story of a large Vancouver family who struggle to come to terms with the fact that, as much as love and hate, fame and notoriety live side by side.
