Men's cross country team wins CIS championship, Guelph athletes excel
For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Guelph’s men’s cross country team has won the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship. Head coach Dave Scott-Thomas was also named Coach of the Year.
The final outcome at the Nov. 9 event was the closest in CIS history, as both Guelph and the University of Windsor finished with a score of 77 points. U of G won the championship by virtue of having the fastest fifth runner.
Reid Coolsaet won the bronze medal and captured First Team All-Canadian honours. Taylor Murphy, who placed seventh, also earned First Team honours and Mark Vollmer, who came in 12th, earned Second Team status.
Guelph’s top female runner, Michaela McClure, became the University’s first 4-time All-Canadian woman with a 12th place finish at the championship, earning Second Team honours.
It is the fifth time that Scott-Thomas has been named CIS Coach of the Year. He is also the winner of 10 Ontario University Athletics' Coach of the Year awards.
U of G also announced its national individual award winners in two other sports. In soccer, Stephanie Mackenzie was honoured as a First Team All-Canadian at the sweeper position. In rugby, Brooke Hilditch, CIS All-Star; Nathalie Bendavid, team captain; and Jocelyn Cooke, prop; also received All-Canadian honours.
