U of G landscape architects win national award
University of Guelph landscape architecture professors Cecelia Paine and Jim Taylor have received a National Citation Award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) for their CD-ROM, titled Canadian Impressions/Impressions canadiennes.
The CD-ROM provides a visual digest of 80 executed works of landscape architecture across Canada. In addition to images, details about the projects and creators are provided for the featured works.
The award, presented earlier this month in Winnipeg, recognizes excellence in demonstrating or communicating the role landscape architects play in shaping the world. "We were extremely pleased to be recognized by our peers," said Paine. "We had a number of students who helped us with the CD, and it was rewarding to see the efforts of those students recognized as well." The project team included landscape architecture graduate students Lorraine Falconer, Dorota Mlynarz and Laureen Snook.
"For the students, it was a chance to be involved in something highly technical and visual," said Paine. "It provided a unique means by which they could learn about the history and scope of our profession in Canada."
The idea of the CD-ROM was born when Paine, who was president of the CSLA, wanted to profile the work of Canadian landscape architects at an international conference in Montreal. She and Taylor then realized that a visual representation of Canadian landscape architects' work would have several applications. "It's really the first digital digest that the professional association has compiled," said Paine. "It's done in a medium that's highly adaptable. Compared to posters and brochures, this digital compilation can be easily shared."
Canadian Impressions is used to show people the scope of the landscape architecture profession. "Our national and provincial professional associations use the CD-ROM as a communications tool at conferences and trade shows, in meetings and in schools," said Paine. It's also available to the general public at info@csla.ca.
U of G also received a regional award from the CSLA for the university's campus master plan. Taylor co-ordinated the review process, and du Toit Allsopp Hillier produced the updated plan. The campus master plan reinforces key elements of an 1882 design for Guelph's agricultural college and replaces a long-range development plan for U of G that dates back to 1964.
