U of G event to help find Scottish roots

The University of Guelph's Scottish studies program is hosting a Family History Day May 3 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help people trace their Scottish roots. The 2001 Statistics Canada census shows that 1,843,115 people in Ontario claim at least partial Scottish ancestry. U of G's Family Day is designed to help these people research their family history.

Ontario Genealogical Society member Jane MacNamara will give three presentations that will guide participants on how to get started in a Scottish family history search, where to look for resources and how to overcome search obstacles.

"This event is an exciting opportunity for the growing number of people interested in researching their families' Scottish origins to learn about sources and techniques from a leading researcher," said Kevin James, head of Scottish studies.

MacNamara, an expert in family history research, has been recognized for her skills in researching ancestors from the United Kingdom. She is the founding member of Friends of Archives of Ontario and originated Genealogy Summer Camps in Toronto. Her own roots can be traced to England, Scotland and Ireland.

Following the lectures, participants will be shown how the university's Scottish collection and the Guelph Public Library can assist in genealogical research. McLaughlin Library has the largest Scottish studies collection outside the United Kingdom. It encompasses both Scottish and Scottish-Canadian history and includes rare books, manuscripts, atlases, travel guides, diaries, letters, newspapers and magazines, pamphlets and town records.

The workshop cost, including a booklet of sources and morning tea, is $40. To register or for more information, contact June Pearson at (519) 824-4120, Ext. 53093, or jpearson@uoguelph.ca.
