Enrolment update
To keep the community informed, the University is providing updated information about Fall enrolment.
Based on historical trends in admissions acceptance rates, as well as factoring in the double cohort, U of G expected to receive between 4,100 and 5,800 acceptances from post-secondary students interested in attending both the main Guelph campus and University of Guelph-Humber in the greater Toronto area. The University used the midpoint of this range of 4,900 as the enrolment target agreement that it signed with the Ontario government earlier this year, said Maureen Mancuso, associate vice-president (academic) and chair of the Enrolment Co-ordinating Committee.
Recent figures released by the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre indicate that some 4,700 students plan to attend the University of Guelph’s main campus in the fall. “While the current figure is higher than our enrolment target for the Guelph campus, it’s still well within our planning range,” Mancuso said. “The government has agreed to full funding, so we will be able to achieve our goal of growth while maintaining quality.”
The majority of the increased acceptances were in the bachelor of commerce and bachelor of science degree programs. “The deans, associate deans, program counsellors, department chairs, faculty advisers, registrarial and student housing staff and many other members of our community are working very hard to accommodate the additional students,” she said. “Contrary to recent media reports, I think it’s important to point out that we will not be holding Saturday classes or labs.”
Rozanski Hall, the new classroom complex, will open before the additional intake in September. U of G will also continue to guarantee on-campus housing at Guelph for semester-one students who applied by the deadline.
The student acceptance rate at the University of Guelph-Humber is approximately 650, about 50 below the predicted planning range. “This was due in part to the strong competition in the greater Toronto area for students who are choosing schools that allow them to continue living at home,” Mancuso said.
“Overall, the quality of the applicant pool was the strongest Guelph has ever seen,” she said. “The fact that so many highly-qualified and motivated students are choosing Guelph is great news. It’s a testament to our outstanding faculty and staff and the positive publicity we’ve received as Canada’s top comprehensive university.”
