U of G, NSERC celebrate 25 years of research excellence

The University of Guelph threw a 25th-anniversary party for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) today, with invited guests including NSERC president Tom Brzustowski and members of the 600 U of G research teams that have received nearly $300 million in support over the years.

"The University of Guelph – and the world of research – is a greatly different place than it was 25 years ago," said Alan Wildeman, vice-president (research). "There has been a tremendous amount of change across the entire spectrum of research as we have evolved and matured into the university we are today. Support from NSERC over the past two and half decades has been a key factor in driving that change and in enabling the research and innovation of our community to give the university the reputation it has."

NSERC’s mandate is to make investments in people, discovery and innovation for the benefit of all Canadians. Since its inception in 1978, it has supported the research projects of some 9,600 university professors every year, as well as more than 17,700 university students and post-doctoral researchers. It also encourages more than 500 Canadian companies to invest in university research annually. In 2003/2004, NSERC will invest $760 million in university-based research and training.

“NSERC supports a wide spectrum of research activities – from the first germ of an idea to commercialization,” said Peter Pauls, a plant agriculture professor and U of G’s NSERC representative. “NSERC grants are highly valued by science and engineering researchers because they represent strong endorsements of research ideas and expertise from Canadian and international research communities.”
