U of G hosts lectures on garden designs, pain in farm animals
The OAC public lecture series presents “High Art and Gardens” March 4 at 4 p.m. in Landscape Architecture 125 and “Pain in Farm Animals” March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the OVC Lifetime Learning Centre. The events are free and open to the public.
“High Art and Gardens” is the second annual Jack and Gerry Vandergrift Memorial Lecture named for the husband-and-wife co-founders of Vandergrift Wholesale Florists Ltd. and hosted by the school of environmental design and rural development and the U of G landscape architecture student society.
Guest speaker Alexander Reford, director of Les Jardins de Metis in Grand-Metis, Quebec, has a sculptural approach to planting, and hold lessons for professional horticulturists and designers and home gardeners.
Vince Molony, chair in animal welfare at the Royal School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, will present “Pain in Farm Animals.” Molony is a world authority in studying pain in domestic farm animals and is particularly interested in the controversial topic of pain associated with castration and tail docking of farm animals.
“I think members of the general public would be concerned if they realized the number of painful procedures being performed on farm animals without pain killers being given,” said animal and poultry science professor Ian Duncan. He said animal welfare advisory committees recently introduced by fast-food restaurant chains are a sign that “the general public is concerned and want to know that the burger they’re eating is humanely produced.”
