Awareness week spotlights access for students with disabilities

Raising awareness about accessibility to campus buildings and facilities for students with disabilities is the focus of an upcoming events-filled week at U of G.

Accessibility Awareness Week, sponsored by Residence Life and the Centre for Students with Disabilities, runs March 8 to 14. It's designed to draw attention to the issue of access for people with visual, hearing, mobility, learning, psychological and medical disabilities.

The week begins Monday with a round-table discussion on issues facing women with disabilities at 5:30 p.m. in Room 335 of the University Centre. At 7 p.m., the film The Other Sister will be shown in the fireplace lounge in Lennox-Addington Hall. A discussion on the integration of people with intellectual disabilities will follow.

Tuesday, there will be a presentation and discussion on coping with learning disabilities at 5:30 p.m. at the Centre for Students with Disabilities, located on the third floor of the University Centre.

On Wednesday, students with disabilities will discuss their experiences at 5:30 p.m. in East Town Hall, followed by a 7 p.m. presentation by student leaders who spent a day using a wheelchair on campus. Thursday and Friday, there will also be round-table discussions at 5:30 p.m. in UC 335.

Saturday at 1 p.m., Paralympian and Canadian track champion Linda Hamilton will share her inspirational story of competing as a world-class athlete with a disability. The event will be held in the Eccles Centre.

The week concludes Sunday at 7 p.m. with the movie The Bill Potter Story , followed by a discussion in the fireplace lounge in Lennox-Addington Hall.
