U of G student to be on Canadian Idol
A University of Guelph student is among the 32 semi-finalists competing on the popular television program Canadian Idol.
Diane Archer, 21, will face off against seven other contestants June 30 at 8 p.m. on CTV. Following the show, there will be a two-hour voting period for the general public. The semi-finalists are competing weekly through July 7.
“Having the opportunity to compete in this competition has made me even more confident that one day I will sing in front of and inspire millions of people,” Archer says.
The 21-year-old is currently studying music and psychology through U of G’s distance education program. She started singing at age five and began playing the piano at age 10. “My parents would have to tear me away from the piano at night because I would keep them up, belting out songs that I had written.”
Archer also plays drums, bass and trumpet, and composes music. She hopes to one day be a “musical psychologist.”
To make it to the semi-finals, Canadian Idol contestants had to survive seven rounds of auditions involving more than 9,000 competitors. The top 32 contestants were divided into four groups of eight. The two competitors from each group who receive the highest number of votes each week will advance to the Top 10. A final two competitors will be determined in a wild card show July 14.
