Award-winning French playwright and novelist to speak at U of G
One of French Canada’s most admired playwrights and novelists will speak at the University of Guelph during an international conference being held in his honour Sept. 16 to 18. The conference is open to the public.
Jean Marc Dalpé, a three-time winner of the Governor General Award and a professional actor, will give a free public performance in French Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the George Luscombe Theatre, MacKinnon Building. Since the early 1980s, Dalpé has been a leader in French theatre in the writing and stage production of close to 100 original plays in French.
“Jean Marc Dalpé personifies the extraordinary importance of the theatre in French Canada,” said U of G French professor Stéphanie Nutting, who organized the conference with François Paré of the University of Waterloo. “The quality and range of his writing is illustrated through his three Governor General’s Awards. One was for a play, one was for a novel and one was for an autobiographical essay.”
The conference, titled Jean Marc Dalpé: Ouvrier d’un dire, will explore Dalpé’s works, which have been translated into English and performed around the world. Talks will be given by 20 Canadian and international scholars, including Université de Paris researcher Patrick Leroux and University of Ottawa professor Dominique Lafon, and by the past artistic director of Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, André Perrier. Most conference papers will be in French, although some speakers have opted to present in English.
