Ceremony to recognize two former U of G members
The University of Guelph is dedicating two white pine trees to the memory of two of its outstanding members, Burton C. Matthews and Nicholas Goldschmidt, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m in the Arboretum. The University community is welcome to attend.
A symbol of the province of Ontario, the white pines will be a living legacy of the great contributions made by these two remarkable men to the University of Guelph.
Matthews, who died Jan. 2, 2004, at the age of 77, became Guelph's fourth president in 1984 at the age of 57. He spent 20 years at Guelph, beginning as a lecturer at OAC and eventually becoming vice-president, academic. From 1970 to 1981, he was president of the University of Waterloo. Returning to Guelph as president, Matthews spearheaded a campaign that raised $65 million, stimulating a major capital expansion on campus.
Goldschmidt, who died Feb. 8, 2004, at the age of 95, was the founder of the Canadian Opera Company, former artistic director of the Guelph Spring Festival, first director of music at U of G and a 1984 recipient of a Guelph honorary degree.
