Students Raise $32,000 for Canadian Cancer Society
University of Guelph students raised $32,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society during Relay for Life, more than double the amount collected by any post-secondary school to date.
“I am so proud of the students who helped organize this event,” said second-year U of G student and event chair Alya Saab, a longtime Cancer Society volunteer and sister of a cancer survivor. “I’m also proud of my peers who built teams and raised this incredible amount of money and of the university for supporting, encouraging and aiding in our efforts. It’s a cause I believe in very strongly because I’ve seen the impact of their work first-hand.”
Relay for Life is a fundraising initiative that takes place across Canada and the United States at various times throughout the year. Proceeds go to fund cancer research, support programs and advocacy. This was the first year U of G hosted an event, which was held last weekend at Alumni Stadium. Twenty-eight teams of 10 participated. Seven other Ontario colleges and universities are registered to hold relays later this year.
Highlights from Relay for Life include a survivor-led victory lap for cancer survivors and their families, and a candlelight ceremony to honour or remember loved ones who have battled cancer.
“This is monumental, and I’m so proud of the U of G committee for putting on such an amazing event,” said Laura Owen, senior fundraising co-ordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society. The amount of money raised “speaks volumes about their dedication, their commitment and their desire to help. They should definitely be congratulated.”
