National Food Network Holds First Annual Meeting
The $22-million national Advanced Foods and Materials Network based at the University of Guelph is holding its first annual conference this month. It will bring together natural scientists, engineers, social scientists, and health and legal researchers from across the country.
“The conference will address how to improve research methods and transfer ideas, and will provide invaluable networking opportunities,” said Rickey Yada, a U of G food science professor and scientific director of the network, which was created in 2003 to develop novel ideas in food safety, nutritional quality and human health. “We encourage anyone who has a interest in food, advanced materials or breakthrough science to come out and participate.”
Scheduled for May 9 and 10 at the Delta Toronto Airport West in Toronto, the conference will include research seminars, speakers and poster presentations. Students involved in the network’s many research projects will also participate.
The Advanced Foods and Materials Network consists of 87 researchers and supports more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students and researchers from 24 universities across Canada. The researchers are working together to achieve improvements in areas such as novel materials, health maintenance and promotion, food quality and public confidence in the food supply. They also investigate issues related to regulations, policies, risk assessments and consumer attitudes.
The network is part of the national Networks of Centres of Excellence program, which fosters partnerships among universities, government and public and private agencies. There are 21 networks across Canada, with Guelph’s being the only one that focuses on food.
