Wrestling Coach Inducted to Hall of Fame
Doug Cox, head coach of U of G’s wrestling program and a former Gryphon wrestler, was inducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame at a ceremony May 14.
“It’s an honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame with so many other great athletes,” said Cox, who was surprised to receive the recognition while he’s still an active coach. Athletes aren’t generally involved in the sport at the time of their induction, he explained.
A four-time senior national champion and four-time gold medallist at the Pan American Junior Championships, Cox was also a gold medallist at the 1987 Pan American Games and represented Canada at the 1988 and 1996 Olympics.
He wrestled for Guelph from 1984 to 1985 and has been head coach for the past 10 seasons. He was named OUA Coach of the Year in his first year of coaching and received the title again in 2002. In 2000, he served as the Sydney Olympic Games Greco-Roman head coach.
“I have to thank all my past coaches, especially my high school coach Frank Corning, who kept me on the right path,” said Cox. “If it wasn't for their hard work and dedication to the sport, I may not have succeeded in the ways I did. As a coach now, I realize how hard a job it can be at times.”
The Canadian Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame was formed in 1975 to recognize the efforts and past accomplishments of wrestlers who have represented Canada at international events and builders who have contributed to the growth and development of wrestling in Canada.
