Canadian Federation of Biological Societies to Meet at U of G

Health, lifestyle and disease prevention will be the main topic for biologists from Canada and abroad gathering at the University of Guelph June 21 to 24 for a conference of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies.

Almost 400 biologists and life scientists from universities, research centres, governments and industry are expected to attend the gathering.

“It’s an attempt to bring people in different disciplines together to discuss current hot topics in human health,” said conference organizer Prof. Arend Bonen, from the Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Metabolism and Health.

The conference will feature discussions led by experts in such topics as lifestyles and heart health, eating and exercise, nutrition and metabolism, obesity and type-2 diabetes.

At the conference, retired nutritional sciences professor Bruce Holub will receive the Gordin Kaplan Award to recognize his efforts to educate the public about health aspects of omega-3 and trans fatty acids. He will speak on “Good Fats, Bad Fats and Heart Health” during a public lecture June 22 at 6:30 p.m. in Room 101 of Rozanski Hall.

Highlights include a session by Mark Tremblay, scientific adviser with Statistics Canada on the Canadian Health Measures Survey, a large-scale project intended to assess the health of Canadians beginning this year; an address by U of G president Alastair Summerlee titled “Biomedical Sciences: A World of Possibilities”; and symposiums on Health Canada’s policies on implementing dietary reference intakes and the effects of new recommendations to extend infant breast-feeding.
