OVC hosts Southern Ontario Reproductive Biology Workshop

Some of Ontario’s leading reproductive biologists will gather this week at the University of Guelph for the 34th annual Southern Ontario Reproductive Biology Workshop.
The daylong symposium will take place Friday, April 28 in the Ontario Veterinary College Lifetime Learning Centre.
“This is really the only occasion for reproductive biologists from the universities in southwestern Ontario to get together to share research and reflect on other relevant information,” says Dr. Allan King, Biomedical Sciences. “It promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and translation of biomedical discoveries into practical clinical applications and hosting it is consistent with the goals of OVC’s strategic plan.”
The annual event attracts investigators from Guelph, McMaster, University of Toronto, York University, Queen’s, University of Ottawa, the University of Western Ontario, and occasionally McGill University.
The workshop provides a venue for scientists to develop collaborations and to meet students seeking research opportunities in reproductive biology. It also provides young investigators an opportunity to present their work and meet other researchers in the field, King says.
“It’s an important networking opportunity. In fact, I’ve recruited graduate students at this workshop myself.”
The program includes oral presentations and posters on subjects ranging from ovarian cancer to infertility to stem cells to the effects of nicotine on reproductive tissues.
The program opens at 9 a.m. with a welcome from Dr. Elizabeth Stone, OVC dean, and a keynote lecture by Dr. Neil MacLusky, chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, titled “Fact and Fiction in Hormone Replacement.”
