Three members of the University have been recognized for their contributions to their field with national and international appointments.

Prof. Peter Kevan, Environmental Biology, has been named to the U.S. National Research Council’s Committee on the Status of Pollinators. The council is part of the National Academies, which also include the National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine.

Kevan will attend his first committee meeting in Washington, D.C., July 6 and 7. He recently returned from Brazil where he and Prof. Vernon Thomas, Integrative Biology, were involved in a field course in pollination biology held at the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador.

The Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association has elected Doug Cox, head coach of U of G’s wrestling program, as its president. Cox will be responsible for overseeing Canadian amateur wrestling leading up to the 2008 Olympics in China. A former Gryphon wrestler, he was inducted into the Canadian Wrestling Hall of Fame in May.

Prof. John Dwyer, Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, was invited to join the Public Health System Accountabilities Subcommittee of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Dwyer was selected because of his background in performance measurement and program evaluation. He is also one of 12 people across the country chosen by Health Canada to serve on its external Food Guide Advisory Committee.

Here on campus, Prof. Julia Christensen Hughes, Hospitality and Tourism Management, has been reappointed director of Teaching Support Services for a three-year term.

Under her leadership, TSS continues to be nationally recognized for its innovative approaches to teaching and learning and for its positive impact on the University’s learner-centred environment, says Prof. Alan Shepard, associate vice-president (academic). Christensen Hughes is also president of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Prof. David Murray, who recently retired from the Department of History, has been named acting director of the School of English and Theatre Studies until July 2006. Prof. Alan Shepard, director of the school since 2002, became associate vice-president (academic) June 15.

U of G’s Athletics Department has hired Paul Funk as its new head coach of women’s volleyball. Funk has been head coach of a professional team in Orebro, Sweden, for the past three years. He was also the assistant coach of Canada’s women’s national team from 1999 to 2004 and an assistant coach at the University of British Columbia from 1994 to 1999.
