U of G Hosts International Wrestling Tournament
July 07, 2005 - Campus Bulletin
Athletes from around the world will be at U of G this weekend competing in the 2005 Canada Cup of International Wrestling. This is the third time Guelph has hosted the event in the past 10 years.
Participants come from Korea, Nigeria, Japan, Great Britain, Pakistan, Haiti, Germany, Austria, Poland, the United States and Canada.
Competition begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. in the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre, with senior event finals scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. The event also features an under-18 division for boys and girls that will serve as a final “tune-up” for the 2005 Canada Summer Games for a number of provinces, including Ontario.
The Canada Cup — one of North America’s longest-running invitational amateur wrestling events — was started in 1980 in Thunder Bay as an alternative to the boycotted Moscow Olympics.
Rogers Television is broadcasting the event in Guelph. Check local TV listings for dates and times.
