Faculty, Student Receive Accolades

Two University of Guelph professors and a student have received recent honours from national and international organizations.
Prof. Ward Chesworth, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, has been named a fellow of the Geological Society of America. Chesworth was cited for his contributions to sustainable agriculture. Founded in 1888, the society advances and promotes Earth science and works to develop practical applications to support human and environmental needs. It has 18,000 members in more than 85 countries.
Prof. Gauri Mittal, School of Engineering, was awarded the Best Researcher Award in the international category by the Japan Food Machinery Manufacturer's Association for his research in pulsed electric field work and ultrasonic equipment to monitor food safety and quality. The award was presented in Tokyo at the International Food Machinery and Technology Exhibition and decided by more than 1,000 association members and researchers. The food machinery industry in Japan is the largest in the world.
The Fraser Institute, an independent Canadian public policy organization, awarded student Maria Klimas first prize in its annual student essay contest. Her essay, titled "Managing Nutrients with Property Rights: An Evaluation of Nutrient Management Under Central Planing and the Market" beat out more than 70 other entries for the top spot. Entries were judged by a panel of environmental policy experts and academics on originality, understanding of the topic and clear expression of ideas. Klimas, who completed a BSc in environmental sciences this year, will begin a master's program in agricultural economics and business this fall.
