U of G Relay for Life Set

University of Guelph students are hoping to raise more than $40,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society during Relay for Life, a 12-hour non-competitive overnight event to begin April 1 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
“Every one of us will be directly or indirectly affected by cancer at some time in our lives,” said Elizabeth Holmes, chair of the U of G event. Statistics show that cancer is the leading cause of premature death and that 40 per cent of people will develop some form of the disease during their lifetime, she said. “Some of us may already have been diagnosed or might be in remission and are continuing to fight this battle.”
Relay for Life is a fundraising initiative that takes place across Canada and the United States at various times throughout the year. Highlights of Relay for Life include a survivor-led victory lap for cancer survivors and their families and a candlelight ceremony to honour or remember loved ones who have battled cancer.
Participating teams must have 10 members, with each required to raise at least $100 in pledges. Proceeds go to fund cancer research, support programs and advocacy.
This is the second year U of G has hosted an event. Last year, 28 teams participated and raised $32,000, the most money ever collected by a post-secondary institution and a record for a first-time event.
